Now in early production, FROG NOIR is a noir-inspired detective game starring anthropomorphic frogs. Follow detective Robbit as he uncovers crimes throughout The Big City!

Overview

FROG NOIR is a visual novel that balances the lighthearted tone of the setting with the darker themes of crime and corruption. It plays into the tropes of a traditional noir story with a froggy twist.

The player must navigate The Big City, make unlikely friends, sneak around, and dig through garbage to uncover a trail of crimes that all leads back to… where exactly? You better find out, or you might be next!

Game Design

The game has a strong focus on world exploration and character interactions. The player will shape their story based on what they choose to say and do. They might even end up following a few red herrings.

Visuals

FROG NOIR is a pixel art-style game where all the assets will be animated using Aseprite and brought to life using Unity and C# coding.

Story

The story has a lighthearted tone that focuses on developing the quirky world that the game is set in. It plays heavily into noir tropes and has a lot of frog puns.

Collecting Clues

Of course, no one's gonna admit to a murder, so it’s up to the player to piece the story together. Looking in certain areas and asking the right questions will get you far. The player will also have to piece together ripped up pieces of paper to find secret letters and codes to safes.

Taking Notes

The character will take notes in-game about what they have learned, and use those notes to unlock questions and new areas that were otherwise unknown.

Sneaking

Some areas may be dangerous to move through, for those the player must hide from flashlights or lightning bugs. They can navigate through these levels using hiding places in the environment and timing their movements just right. If a player is spotted, its game over.

Casual, short games with a nice cohesive story are a great way to de-stress from a long day. I want to create a world and a story that players want to immerse themselves in for a short time, and leave with a satisfying conclusion. Assuming they catch the right culprit…
